Grand Traverse Area
The Traverse City area boasts more than 250 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and almost 90,000 acres of inland lakes. The Grand Traverse region is home to the largest concentration of tart cherry orchards in the world. The National Cherry Festival is held each July in Traverse City and attended by some 500,000 people. From 2001 to 2003, Traverse City produced more new and expanded industrial plants than any other small town in the United States. The Traverse City region was named by Site Selection magazine in 2003 and 2004 as the Best Small Town in America for business growth. In fall 2004, Cherry Capital Airport completed a $50 million expansion project that included a new passenger terminal. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy is one of the just six maritime academies in the country authorized to train officers for the U.S. Merchant Marines. More than 2 million tourists visit the Grand Traverse area each year. The Grand Traverse region is home to Munson Medical Center, one of Solucient’s Top 100 hospitals in America.
